Today we took a Thai cooking class with the Silom school. Our first stop was the outdoor market. It seemed a lot more sanitary than the ones I’ve been to in KL. We bought chicken, shrimp, noodles, fresh coconut, and lots and lots of vegetables.
We spotted this man selling goldfish, but they were not in any of today’s recipes.
Once we arrived at the cooking school we set about washing our bounty. We scrubbed EVERYTHING including the garlic, bananas, and eggs!
Our menu today consisted of tom yum soup, phad thai, chicken with cashews, green curry, and a banana and coconut dessert.

The mother and father worked up a sweat as they cut, chopped, and pounded ingredients.
It isn’t easy working from a floor mat!
Everything tasted great. Unfortunately, toward the end of the class sumthin’ wasn’t sitting too pretty in the mother’s belly. We ended up having to make a quick exit to get her back to the hotel! Let’s just say we had our 4th of July fireworks a little early this year.
After delivering my mother safely back to the Imm Fusion it was time to deliver my father to the tailor shop where he was meeting Mr. Happy for their final suit fittings.
At first, the father was only going to have a shirt made, but he soon decided he’d go the whole nine yards – I think that was also the amount of material they needed to make his suit.
Unfortunately, the suits won’t be finished before we leave Bangkok, so the tailor will have to mail them to us in Phuket.
That night, the mother still wasn’t feeling up for dinner. Mr. Happy, the father, and I decided we’d cave in and have some Western food tonight. We went to Pizza Hut. But they’d run out of pizza! Instead, we went to an outdoor night market where you buy your food from individual food stands.
Selecting our food was a little difficult because almost everything was in Thai and no one spoke English. The father got upset when he tried to unsuccessfully communicate that he wanted duck with noodles. The woman thought he wanted a whole duck and refused to do business with him. He ended up with an omelette and was chagrinned when he wasn’t given any cutlery.
He was so engrossed in how to eat this omelet with his fingers, he completely missed the woman sitting right behind him who threw up TWICE!
In the above photo you can see the woman in pink cleaning up the mess, while a friend puts a comforting hand around the vomiter, and the unassuming father completely focused on how to eat with his fingers.
I didn’t want to ruin anyone’s dinner so I pushed my dumplings aside and kept my mouth shut. I am too much of a lady to tell tale of what transpired right under their unsuspecting (and quite possibly malfunctioning) noses.
After dinner Mr. Happy and the father settled into some beanbag chairs to watch Wimbledon. I’m pretty sure, it was the first time the father has “settled in” to a bean bag chair since 1967.
